GYRO NIGHTS 2012 ART FESTIVAL
BOUNDARIES OF CINEMA : FUTURE FOLKLORE and THE ISLAND AS
A PHILOSOPHICAL PARADIGM
call for video artists and filmmakers
Papay
Gyro Nights Art Festival is celebrating an ancient tradition of
the island Papa Westray, aka Papay, or Papey in Meiri, The Night
of Gyros (known in other Nordic countries as Gygr, Gryla, Grylur,
Grøleks, Skeklers)
Call for screen based works which are exploring Ritual and/or Island
through becoming a Ritual and/or Island itselves, or created through
Ritualised process, or suggesting new Rituals through various interpretations
of “repetition”, “loop” and “island”;
works build on a gut feeling against as concept
Traditions of the island are developing through endless seasonal
ritualised repetition on isolated by the sea land and affected by
the dreams of shipwreck survivors and strange objects and ideas
of unknown qualities washed on the shore, which are making you to
forget about all logical structures you’ve been following
before .. so "screen based" as all other conventional
definitions of "cinema" can be challenged and new cinematic
constructions and assemblages can be proposed
Selected videos will be screened at unconventional locations around
the island Papa Westray (Papay) and nominated for Knap o Howar 2012
Art Prize (Art Prize issued by people of Papa Westray (Papay))
